AYURVEDA
AND PANCHAKARMA THERAPY IN CANCER
The
Ayurvedic History taking and assessment of
Mind-Body-Spirit Complex.
|
|
|
|
|
| Step
One: Preparing the body for purification therapy:
(Poorva karma) |
The
first few days are spent in cleansing the
body and mind internally by taking light nourishing
diet and Ayurvedic herbal preparation to cleanse
the clogged up and toxic tissues of the body.
A mild laxative herb is given to remove impurities
from the bowel.
Advice is given on gentle yogic exercise,
breathing and meditational exercise to enhance
the purification and rejuvenation effect.
This process is called Purva Karma with Deepan
(promoting metabolic fire), Paachan (digestion),
Langhan (lightening of the body). A special
preparation of Ghee- clarified butter is given
in measured doses to promote cleansing and
digestive process, and to soften the impurities
in the body and to lubricate the body tissues.
Throughout the therapy , nourishing and digestive
herbs are taken and unhealthy foods are strictly
forbidden. We are what we eat!
Good digestion (Pachanam) and nourishing diet
(Brihamnam) is essential in treating illness
from its roots |
| Step
Two: Steaming Out the Impurities |
| The
next step is Svedan - steaming out the toxins
from the body by medicated steam in a special
steam box called Sved Yantra – to open
up all the pores of the skin and muscle and
loosening the impurities which are thrown
out via the sweat and the enhanced excretion
by the kidneys and bowels brought about by
the herbs and the massage technique that follows. |
| The
Purification Process : Sanshodhan Karma |
| Step
Three: Oil application and Massage Therapy |
| Shirodhara
and Shiro Abhyanga - Indian Head and Scalp
massage |
| A
sophisticated and lavish deeply therapeutic
massage with warm herbalised oils to release
those tender knots and to mobilise the flow
of body fluids and energy (Prana or Chi).
This releases the toxins from the tissues,
encouraging it to be excreted through the
various tubular channels called shrota. The
herbal ingredients in the oils are absorbed
in the body to heal the tissues. The massage
is based on 108 marma energy points
and chakras - nerve centres and in
the body which affect the coordinated functioning
of the various organs of the body and the
immune system by giving the right ‘messages’
to and from the brain and endocrine glands. |
| Shirodhara
and Shiro Abhyanga - Indian Head and Scalp
massage |
Stimulating
the Flow of the Life Force - Prana or Chi.
A deeply relaxing flow of aromatic warm oil
to the forehead followed by head and neck
massage - to revive and stimulate
the head chakra, and the vital points
on the scalp, releasing the tender knots in
the scalp, temples and facial muscles and
bones.
Prana or Life Force is located here. Indian
Head Massage of the marma points with appropriate
oils is said to stimulate the hypothalamus
and Pituitary Gland and other areas of the
brain to promote healing messages to be relayed
to the various part of the body.
Insomnia, chronic headaches, migraine, blood
pressure and anxiety and depression are some
of the common outcomes of cancer and cancer
therapy which are relieved by ayurvedic head
and neck treatment. The points of knotted
energy can be located on the head and face
released by the Ayurvedic marma treatment
of head and neck. Nasya:
or Inhalation To ‘clear the head’:
Ayurvedic herbal oils or nose drops are given.
These are said to stimulate the vital parts
of the brain by reflex action and to clear
channels of the brain and the breathing apparatus
thus promoting healthy oxygenation. |
| Step
Four : Cleansing the Bowel, Stimulating the
Abdominal Organs Herbal Enema: Basti Karma |
| Old
age starts in the bowel at a young age! |
|
According to Ayurved the origin
of all disease is the bowel - or poor digestion
in the gut and liver. A medicated enema
of herbs and warm oil called Basti
Karma is an essential part of the
detoxifying therapy. This helps to promote
good excretion and clears the bowel. The
extracts of Ayurvedic herbs used in the
enema are absorbed by the body to reach
the tissue cells and cleanse the system.
This process also sharpens one’s ‘Gut
Feeling’ by stimulating the pelvic
nerve centre. The nerve centre at the anus
called the Muldhara (the Root Support) is
the junction of various nerves which control
the overall harmony of the body systems.
The Muldhara chakra supports the human being
as a whole as it is situated at the junction
of the three main channels (Nadis)
of nervous energy and life force, thus coordinating
the psychic, physical, sexual, and spiritual
functions of the human being.
Constipation, acidity and
indigestion are often the common problems
or side effects in cancer and cancer therapy
and are prevented and treated effective
by ayurvedic herbal enema which is very
comfortable. |
| Step
Five: Rejuvenating herbal treatment: Rasayan
Therapy |
Following
Panchakarma therap , recipients are given
rejuvenating herbs called Rasayan to promote
growth of healthy body cells and tissue. Rasayans
boost the immune system and reverse the process
of ageing, maintaining the vitality of body
and mind.
Popular Rasayans which help treat disease
are called Naimittik Rasayans (Therapeutic
Medications). They can also serve as Kamya
Rasayan or Rejuvenating Aphrodisiacs which
prevent illness and maintain immunity and
positive health into old age.
Panchakarma helps arrest tumour growth and
promote healing by strengthening body tissues
enhancing the immune system, stimulating the
liver and bone marrow, allowing the excretion
of toxins, and promoting growth of normal
tissue cells. People feel deeply revived in
their energy and rejuvenated after going through
the panchakarma detoxifying programme.
